INSIDER #017

🙋‍♂️ Hey first-timers—glad you're here. And cheers to you loyal regulars, always a pleasure. Issue #017 of Ipswich Insider has landed. This week we wander through Kyeewa, East Ipswich’s timeless sandstone villa. Unwrap the record-breaking gift of Hidden Vale Nature Refuge. And light up the Spark Ipswich schedule. Let’s dive in:

🏛️ Kyeewa: Ipswich's Rare Sandstone Colonial Gem

Kyeewa is a grand colonial sandstone villa built in 1890 by Ipswich stonemason Ernest Greenway. It still shows off a deep three-sided verandah and a timber rear wing where stone was meant to go, revealing a daring mid-build change. 6 Greenway children played under the giant Moreton Bay fig that shades the yard, and their family held the keys for an unbroken 98 years.

  • One-Family Legacy. 98 years of Greenway ownership (1890 – 1988).
  • Stone-Timber Twist. Three sandstone walls up front, timber service wing at the rear.
  • Heritage Listed. Queensland Heritage Register ID# 600602 safeguards Kyeewa’s 1,825 m² site.
  • Rare Survivor. One of a small handful of intact sandstone villas in timber-rich Ipswich.
  • Workshop Showpiece. Drawing-room fireplace carved in Ernest Greenway’s own workshop.

🌳 Ipswich's Biggest Private Donation: Hidden Vale Nature Refuge

Ready for a record? Hidden Vale’s (Old Hidden Vale Nature Refuge) land covenant is the No. 1 private donation in Ipswich history, and it sits just 40 minutes from your front door.

  • 3,110 ha donated (≈ 7,700 acres) — about 25 % larger than the whole White Rock–Spring Mountain Conservation Estate.
  • Gift made by the founders of Flight Centre & Spicers Retreats (net worth ≈ A$630 million): Graham “Skroo” Turner (Granite-Belt-raised veterinarian) and wife Jude channel their giving through the Turner Family Foundation.
  • 1999 – The buy-up: Already owners of the 8,000-acre Spicers Peak Lodge (bought in 1998, about 60 km south), the Turners snapped up the whole 4,560-ha Hidden Vale station when the sellers refused to split off just the grazing paddocks.
  • 2007 – The hand-over: Wildlife surveys prompt them to covenant 3,110 ha — roughly 1,860 ha inside Ipswich LGA — as Old Hidden Vale Nature Refuge. At ~A$15 000/ha, that Ipswich slice alone equals ≈ A$28 million of foregone land value.
  • Species jackpot: Ecologists have tallied 347 native species, including koalas, southern greater gliders and the vulnerable brush-tailed rock-wallaby.
  • 2017 – Cash kicker: A further A$18.5 million builds and funds UQ’s on-site Wildlife Research Centre for 30 years — Queensland’s largest single-family conservation endowment.
  • Your outdoor playground: About 1,450 ha remain in Turner hands around Spicers Hidden Vale lodge, hosting working cattle and 80 km of signed mountain-bike and hiking trails open via day-pass.
  • Bigger picture: The refuge stitches the final seam of the 51 km Little Liverpool Range corridor, giving Ipswich’s koalas and glossy black-cockatoos an unbroken highway to Main Range National Park.

Why it matters: One family turned potential housing blocks (some-day) into Ipswich’s largest backyard — delivering habitat, recreation, tourism jobs and > A$46 million of private conservation value without costing ratepayers a cent.
