NEW: INSIDER #020

🦎 Hey there — Welcome to Issue #020. Explore Glendalough, a Rosewood house from 1900, unlock Ipswich’s street-name playbook, and fill your diary with the best upcoming events. Ready? Let’s go:

🪟 Meet Glendalough — Rosewood's Federation Queenslander Landmark

  • Type. Federation‑era Queenslander, high‑set timber villa with wrap‑around verandahs and Queen Anne flourishes.
  • Timeline. Raised circa 1900, lavishly enlarged in 1911 when storekeeper T.E. Bulcock took a £800 ($247,000 in 2025) mortgage to create a showpiece.
  • Showpiece. Signature eight‑window octagonal summer room and grand double staircase still turn heads on John Street.
  • Scale. Originally 5 principal rooms (now 12) set on about 1.25 acres (≈ 5,400 m²) of once carefully landscaped grounds.
  • Heritage. State‑listed on 21 Oct 1992 (Place ID 600735) with most original fabric intact, including pressed‑metal ceilings and leadlights.
  • Stewardship. Grant family owned it for 35 years; 1990s custodians (Archibold's) won heritage awards for sensitive restoration.
  • Value. Auctioned in March 2018 for $535,000, proving historic character still commands solid interest.

🚏 Asphalt Alphabet

Ever driven from Sapphire Street to Serenity Street and wondered who dreams these names up?

In this week’s SPOTLIGHT we shine the light on how new Ipswich streets get their names.

Behind every new Ipswich estate—Providence, Sovereign Pocket, Fernbrooke Ridge, White Rock Estate—lies a balance‑sheet first, theme board second. Developers crunch lot yields, then wrap the numbers in a marketable story: gemstones, saints, songbirds, even world cities.

Council’s role is simpler: stop duplicates, keep suffixes logical and make sure ambos can pronounce every word on a radio call. If a name is unique, clear and theme‑aligned, it’s usually approved.

This report tours the suburb subdivisions launched since Springfield Lakes, spotlighting their themes, quirkiest streets, the rules that shaped them and the occasional controversy that still sparks debate.
