🌟 Meet William Berry Residence – Burnett Street's Early Brick Landmark and Keystone of the Baines Park Heritage Cluster

  • Address. 1 Burnett St, West Ipswich (Baines Park Precinct)
  • Origin. Land bought for £35 in 1855 by Scottish farmer-investor William Berry.
  • Build. Two-storey Georgian brick home completed 1874, replacing his first timber hut.
  • Style. Wide verandahs, slate roof, detached kitchen and an underground rain-water tank.
  • Land. Sits on a 617 m² corner rise just past the NW corner of Denmark Hill. Locals used to call it “Berry’s Hill” because he owned several plots of land next to eachother.
  • Rooms. Eight main rooms in the 1886 listing; original two-stall stable and buggy shed have been replaced by a rear garage-studio.
  • Evolution. Became flats by WWII, youth shelter in the 1980s, carefully restored since 1990s.
  • Heritage. Listed 1992; part of Burnett Street trio with Idavine and Notnel.
  • Sales. Price climbed from $130,000 (1983) to $175,000 (2001) to $950,000 (2022).
  • Legacy. 150-year story proves solid design and sweeping views never lose appeal.
