INSIDER #029 – THE SNAG RETURNS

Welcome to Issue #029—come on in. How many of you have wondered about that art deco-looking house at the top of Salisbury St across from Limestone Park? It's called Orangefield, and it's an old brick homestead of what was once a 20-acre orchard. Also, why are so many Ipswich venues run by non-profits, and which ones are the biggest? Plus, THE SNAG (our Top Picks newsletter section) is back! Let's dive in.

Orangefield: Art Deco-looking Brick Homestead of a Former Fruit Orchard

You know the house at the top of Salisbury Road, across from Limestone Park?

That’s Orangefield, a two-storey brick home from about 1870.

  • Built. c.1870 by William Hancock. Solid brick and two storeys.
  • Sold. 1875 to orchardist J. A. Jackes. Homestead for a 20-acre orchard down to Cemetery Road.
  • Fruit. Custard apples, persimmons, mangoes, oranges, figs and plums.
  • Subdivision. 1914 sale into 65 blocks. Most homes arrived after World War II.
  • Today. Rendered walls and a columned porch. An Art Deco style front over the old brick core.
