INSIDER #033 - TOP 18 TREE TYPES OF IPSWICH

Today we're branching out with an essential field guide to Ipswich's top 18 tree types. We stroll into Liberty Hall - Mary Tregear Hostel, a Queensland heritage-listed Georgian brick townhouse. And drifting onto the radar: free dragon boating at Cribb Park, Sunday 9am. Catch ya round.

84 Limestone St, Ipswich.

Today we're looking at a heritage-listed Colonial Georgian brick townhouse (1850s), better known as Liberty Hall - Mary Tregear Hostel.

Owned by the Queensland Country Women's Association (QCWA) for about 80 years (1942-2021), then sold in 2021.

In 2022, council approved a redevelopment on the same lot: medical centre, childcare and cafe behind. The 1960s hall goes, the old brick house (on the Queensland Heritage Register) is kept and refit as offices, with heritage works approved by the State Assessment and Referral Agency (SARA).

Once the DA was approved, the house + lot sold again in 2024.

Let's see the whole story from the 1850s to today.

Your Ipswich Tree Cheat Sheet

Did you know the City of Ipswich has 690,000 trees?

That’s about 5 trees per footy field spread city-wide.

Why that matters: most of our canopy comes from a few native gums. Here’s the scale:

Ironbarks: 320,000. Spotted gums: 210,000. Blue gums: 70,000.

Street trees feel everywhere, but they’re the fringe. The big numbers live on sandstone ridges and floodplains — bush, not boulevards.

Branch into the list: the Top 18 trees of Ipswich — counts, heights, why they thrive here, where you’ll spot them, and quick ID cues.
