Today we’re doing a lap of Pommer Street in Brassall, fresh off its Best Street win in Ipswich’s Christmas Lights Competition, then sharing a holiday hours cheat sheet so you don’t get caught out by closures around town. All the details below. Merry Christmas, and thanks for reading and replying each week.
🎄 Peek behind the scenes of Ipswich’s “Best Street” winners in the Christmas Lights Comp: Pommer St
Pommer St in Brassall (24, 26 and 32) won Best Street in Ipswich’s Christmas Lights Comp this year.
We got a behind-the-scenes look at 24 and 26. Here’s what “winning” actually looks like.
-
Spend: tens of thousands of dollars in decorations.
-
Setup: 8 weeks before switch-on (24 and 26).
-
Pack-down: 2-3 weeks back into boxes and storage.
-
Scale: 300+ powered light sets and plug-pack items per main house.
-
Power: 50+ powerboards across 24 and 26.
-
Reality: zoning, labelling, weather protection, endless Bunnings trips, and late-night fixes when something trips.
-
Maintenance: lights come off mid-December just to trim hedges, then go back up.
-
For families: 26 nights lights-on (30 Nov–25 Dec) and 1,000 glow sticks for visitors.
-
Prize: $500 and a council “Best Street” sign.
This kind of effort is happening right across Ipswich. Every great lights house is pouring heaps of time and money into December (plus November and January) so kids and families can have a magic night out.

📚 NEW: Rev Arthur Trevor Foote’s expanded Footprints in Ipswich History is out now. It traces the Foote family and Ipswich City Joinery, with loads of historic photos and local detail.
Trevor and his daughter Juanita live at 26/24 Pommer St and took me on a walk-through of their 2025 Best Street Christmas Lights houses.
Less than 200 copies of the new expanded edition are left, so if you love the heritage stuff in Ipswich Insider, you’ll love this book. Let’s rally behind locals who put in this kind of effort researching and documenting Ipswich history and sell them out to make his Christmas.
$25 posted. Order: footearthur@gmail.com or text 0409 889 386. Email Trevor your details here →
